چکیده
Iodine deficiency (ID) is associated with increased prevalence of goiter, increased risk for neurodevelopmental disorders, and is the world’s leading cause of intellectual deficits. Iodine nutritional status of a population is assessed by measurements of urinary iodine concentrations which are also used to define, indicate, survey and monitor iodine deficiency and consequently its treatment. Several methods are available for urinary iodine determination. Discussed here are some of the limitations and controversies related to urinary iodine determinations, and recent findings with emphasis on measurements of urinary iodine concentrations in children and during pregnancy. © 2002 The Canadian Society of Clinical Chemists. Objectives: To determine the mechanism(s) of Impila (Callilepis laureola)-induced toxicity in human hepatoblastoma Hep G2 cells in vitro and the possible prevention of this toxicity by N-acetylcysteine (NAC). Design and methods: Cells were treated with an aqueous extract of Impila (10 mg/mL) for up to 24 h. NAC (5 mM) was administered either concomitantly with Impila or one hour post Impila tre...

Objective: Major challenges for physicians include selection of effective tests in the time-sensitive identification and management of patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS). We review whether cardiac marker testing performed at the point-of-care (POC) has an impact on clinical management and guidance of intervention for ACS patients. Design and Methods: Evidence from recently published s...

Objectives: Familial chylomicronemia syndrome is characterized by massive accumulation of plasma chylomicrons, which typically results from an absolute deficiency of lipoprotein lipase (LPL). Chylomicronemia in pregnancy is a rare, but serious clinical problem and can be found in patients with underlying molecular defects in the LPL gene. We report the course and treatment of an 18 yr-old primi...
